Acharya

Shree Ramanand Swami was Uddhav incarnate. He received Vaishnavi Diksha from Shree Ramanuj Acharya, personally whilst in a dream-state. So Ramanuj Acharya is Ramanand Swamis Guru. Shreeji Maharaj is that Ramanand Swamis disciple and successor.

In Vadtal, on Prabodhini Ekadashi of Vikram Samvat 1882, after due deliberation Shreeji Maharaj adopted His nephews Ayodhyaprasadji Pande and Raghuveerji Pande as His sons. Establishing the two Gadis i.e. NarNarayan Dev Gadi at Ahmedabad and LaxmiNarayan Dev Gadi at Vadtal, Shreeji Maharaj instructed the two brothers to draw lots, to decide who would be seated on which Gadi. Shreeji Maharaj then instructed all the followers present to do poojan of their respective Acharyas. Ayodhyaprasadji Maharaj was appointed the inaugural Acharya of the NarNarayan Dev Gadi (also known as the Uttar Vibhag - Northern division), whilst Raghuveerji Maharaj became the inaugural Acharya of the LaxmiNarayan Dev Gadi (also known as the Dakshin Vibhag - Southern division.

It is worth recalling the event when his sister-in-law Suvasinibhabhi was bathing Ghanshyam Maharaj. She noticed various symbols on the soles of His feet. When Ghanshyam Maharaj asked what she was looking, Suvasinibhabhi replied, Baapuji has mentioned that the lines on your feet show to be a king of the future. Ghanshyam Maharaj calmly replied, If that be the case, then I shall give my kingdom to your son.

The Acharya of the NarNarayan Dev Gadi at Ahmedabad is presently His Holiness Acharya Shri Koshlendraprasadji Maharaj.

The method by which future Acharyas are to be appointed is enshrined in the document known as Desh Vibhag No Lekh. It is not only a legal document that has stood the testing times since its existence, it is an instruction primarily to the Acharyas, but with specific instructions for the ordinary followers also.

amd1.jpgAcharya Shree Ayodhyaprasadji Maharaj

Acharya Shree Ayodhyaprasadji Maharaj was the first Acharya of the Ahmedabad Diocese (Nar Narayan Dev Gadi) of the Swaminarayan Sampraday. In accordance with the Desh Vibhag Lekh (the document outlining the regional division of the Sampraday) prepared by Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan (Shree Hari), he was entrusted with the responsibility of leading and administering the Ahmedabad Diocese.

He was born in the holy village of Chhapaiya. His father, Rampratapji Pande, was the elder brother of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan (Shree Sahajanand Swami). From an early age, Acharya Maharaj was known for his humility, simplicity, and gentle nature. Despite holding the highest spiritual office, he remained free from pride and attachment to status. His lifelong association with Shree Hari enabled him to imbibe countless divine virtues. He was deeply rooted in righteousness, self-discipline, and spiritual realization.

A remarkable incident from his life illustrates his extraordinary devotion and detachment. Once, while performing Manasi Puja (mental worship) at Avadh Bhuvan, Acharya Maharaj became so deeply absorbed in meditation upon Bhagwan that he completely transcended bodily awareness. During this time, a scorpion crawled onto his back and repeatedly stung him, leaving several red marks. Yet he remained entirely immersed in his worship and felt no pain. It was only after completing his meditation, nearly an hour later, that he became aware of the insect bites. The devotees were deeply distressed upon seeing his injuries. However, Acharya Maharaj calmly consoled them, explaining that every living being acts according to its inherent nature. The scorpion had simply behaved as a scorpion does, while human beings should act with compassion, patience, and understanding. Through this incident, he demonstrated the highest ideals of spiritual absorption, tolerance, and equanimity.

Acharya Maharaj firmly upheld the principle of equality. He never distinguished among devotees based on their social standing or economic background and treated everyone with the same love and respect. A distinguished scholar, he had a profound love for learning and encouraged the pursuit of knowledge. He was also an accomplished poet, and many of his devotional compositions continue to be sung in Swaminarayan temples today. His scholarly contribution includes the Sanskrit commentary Tatvartha Deepika on the revered scripture Satsangijivan.

The magnificent Haveli in Ahmedabad stands as a testament to his vision and leadership. He also played a vital role in establishing several Swaminarayan temples at places such as Bamroli, Idar, Siddhpur, Mandvi (Kutch), Chhapaiya, and many others. In accordance with the command of Shree Hari as prescribed in the sacred Shikshapatri, he founded a Sanskrit school in Ahmedabad to promote scriptural education and preserve the rich traditions of Sanskrit learning.

Recognizing his son's spiritual qualities and capabilities, Acharya Shree Ayodhyaprasadji Maharaj appointed Acharya Shree Keshavprasadji Maharaj as his successor to the Ahmedabad Diocese. During his remarkable 42-year tenure as Acharya, he strengthened the foundations of the Swaminarayan Sampraday and brought immense glory to the Ahmedabad Gadi. His life remains an enduring example of humility, scholarship, devotion, and selfless leadership, occupying a distinguished place in the glorious history of the Swaminarayan Sampraday.

amd2.jpgAcharya Shree Keshavprasadji Maharaj

Acharya Shree Keshavprasadji Maharaj, the son of Acharya Shree Ayodhyaprasadji Maharaj, was born in Ahmedabad at his ancestral residence near Rangmahal. Born into the sacred lineage of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan, he was endowed with the noble virtues and divine qualities of the holy family. From a young age, he dedicated himself to worship, devotion, and spiritual discipline. Following in the footsteps of his revered father, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to the service of the Ahmedabad Diocese. Upon succeeding as the Acharya, he faithfully upheld the traditions, principles, and disciplines of the Swaminarayan Sampraday with great sincerity and religious commitment.

Although he was known to be somewhat short-tempered by nature, it never affected his duties or responsibilities as Acharya. He possessed a loving and compassionate disposition and treated devotees with affection and care. A great patron of learning, he deeply respected scholars and encouraged the pursuit of knowledge. During his religious tours, he regularly sought the company of learned sadhus and saints, valuing their wisdom and spiritual guidance.

Acharya Maharaj played a significant role in the preparation of the Sanskrit commentary on Satsangi Bhushan and consistently encouraged literary and scholarly pursuits. Under his guidance, several rulers of the erstwhile princely statesโ€”including Dhrangadhra, Morvi, Wankaner, Limbdi, Wadhwan, Malia, and Bhuj-Kutchโ€”embraced the Swaminarayan Sampraday with devotion.

His dedicated efforts also led to the establishment of Swaminarayan temples at Karachi, Prantij, Manasa, Dabhan, Charadva, Visnagar, and several other places. In addition, the assembly halls (Sabha Mandaps) at the temples in Ahmedabad, Muli, Dholka, and Jetalpur were constructed under his leadership, reflecting his commitment to the growth and development of the Sampraday.

Acharya Shree Keshavprasadji Maharaj served as the Acharya of the Ahmedabad Diocese for nearly twenty-two years. Before the end of his tenure, he appointed his son, Acharya Shree Purushottamprasadji Maharaj, as his successor. Through his steadfast leadership, devotion, and dedication to spiritual learning and temple development, he made lasting contributions to the Swaminarayan Sampraday and further strengthened the legacy of the Ahmedabad Gadi.

amd3.jpgAcharya Shree Purshottamprasadji Maharaj

Acharya Shree Purushottamprasadji Maharaj, the third Acharya of the Shree Nar Narayan Dev Gadi, was known for his affectionate and expressive nature. Although he possessed a somewhat fiery temperament, his deep love for Bhagwan and unwavering devotion defined his character. He could not tolerate even the slightest disrespect toward worship, devotion, or the sacred traditions of the Swaminarayan Sampraday.

Committed to the mission of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan (Shree Hari), Acharya Maharaj frequently travelled to towns and villages to propagate His teachings and inspire devotees to lead righteous and spiritual lives. He was a great patron of literature and encouraged scholarly and creative pursuits within the Sampraday. He also took a keen interest in the construction and architectural development of various temples, ensuring that they reflected the dignity and grandeur of the faith.

Recognizing the importance of the long-term sustainability of the Sampraday, Acharya Maharaj worked tirelessly to strengthen the financial foundations of the temples. Through his foresight and dedicated efforts, he helped secure the resources necessary for their continued maintenance, preservation, and religious activities.

As Acharya Shree Purushottamprasadji Maharaj had no children of his own, he adopted Vasudevprasadji, the son of Kashiprasadji Pande, and appointed him as his successor to the Ahmedabad Diocese. He served as Acharya for nearly twelve years, during which he made significant contributions to the growth and stability of the Shree Nar Narayan Dev Gadi. His life of devotion, dedication, and selfless service continues to be remembered with great reverence in the history of the Swaminarayan Sampraday.

amd4.jpgAcharya Shree Vasudevprasadji Maharaj

Acharya Shree Vasudevprasadji Maharaj was born to Shree Kashiprasadji, a descendant of Rampratapji Pande, the elder brother of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan. As Acharya Shree Purushottamprasadji Maharaj had no son, he adopted Vasudevprasadji and appointed him as his successor to the Ahmedabad Diocese.

Since Vasudevprasadji Maharaj was still a minor at the time of his succession, the administrative affairs of the Diocese were managed by the trustees until he attained adulthood. As he grew, he distinguished himself as an accomplished scholar, possessing profound knowledge of Sanskrit and Prakrit literature, as well as the sacred scriptures. He was also highly proficient in the English language, reflecting his broad intellectual outlook.

One of the most significant milestones of his tenure was the grand celebration of the centenary of the Shikshapatri, the sacred scripture authored by Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan. This historic celebration was held at the Ahmedabad Temple and established a tradition that continues to this day, with the anniversary of the Shikshapatri being commemorated annually with great devotion and reverence.

Acharya Shree Vasudevprasadji Maharaj undertook extensive tours across the towns and villages of northern Gujarat, accompanied by a distinguished group of learned saints, devotional singers, and devoted followers. Through these spiritual journeys, he spread the teachings of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan, strengthened the faith of countless devotees, and inspired many to embrace a life of devotion and righteousness. Even today, many elderly devotees fondly recall the memorable and spiritually uplifting occasions of those visits.

Widely respected for his scholarship, leadership, and dedication to the Sampraday, Acharya Shree Vasudevprasadji Maharaj occupies a revered place in the history of the Shree Nar Narayan Dev Gadi. He served as Acharya for thirty-six years, during which he greatly strengthened the spiritual and organizational foundations of the Diocese. Before the end of his tenure, he appointed his son, Acharya Shree Devendraprasadji Maharaj, as his successor, ensuring the continued leadership of the sacred lineage.

amd5.jpgAcharya Shree Devendraprasadji Maharaj

Acharya Shree Devendraprasadji Maharaj, the son of Acharya Shree Vasudevprasadji Maharaj, was born in Ahmedabad on the auspicious occasion of Sharad Purnima. Like the full moon on the night of his birth, he was blessed with a calm mind, a compassionate heart, and an abundance of noble virtues. Under his enlightened leadership, the devotional and spiritual activities of the Shree Nar Narayan Dev Gadi flourished and expanded significantly.

From an early age, Acharya Maharaj displayed exceptional intellectual abilities. He received a thorough education in Sanskrit and became proficient in composing verses in the language. He was equally fluent in Gujarati and English and possessed a deep appreciation for music, which remained an integral part of his personality. Although physically delicate in appearance, he possessed remarkable endurance, determination, and strength of character. His unwavering willpower enabled him to undertake even the most demanding responsibilities with ease and dedication.

Acharya Shree Devendraprasadji Maharaj ascended to the Acharyaship at the young age of fourteen. As he was still a minor, the trustees managed the administrative affairs of the Diocese until he reached adulthood. Nevertheless, his vision and leadership qualities were evident from an early age. During his tenure, he initiated numerous construction projects and developed facilities for the comfort and service of saints and devotees, contributing greatly to the growth and infrastructure of the Sampraday.

Among his most significant contributions was his decision to preserve and share the sacred heritage of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan. He donated many of the holy relics and personal articles that had been used by Shree Hari and had remained in the possession of the Acharya lineage, making them available for the darshan of devotees. These priceless relics continue to inspire profound devotion and reverence among followers of the Sampraday.

Acharya Maharaj was also a distinguished patron of literature and learning. Through his encouragement and support, the Gujarati translations of the revered scriptures Satsangi Jeevan and Harikrishna Lilamrut were prepared, making these sacred texts accessible to a much wider audience. It is widely believed that the volume and quality of religious literature produced during his tenure remain unparalleled in the history of the Swaminarayan Sampraday.

Deeply committed to the cause of education, Acharya Shree Devendraprasadji Maharaj established the Devendraprasadji Education Trust to promote learning and academic excellence. Institutions such as Sahajanand Arts and Commerce College stand as enduring examples of his vision and dedication to education.

He was blessed with three sons and two daughters. Recognizing the qualities of leadership and spiritual commitment in his eldest son, he appointed Acharya Shree Tejendraprasadji Maharaj as his successor to the Shree Nar Narayan Dev Gadi, thereby ensuring the continued guidance and preservation of the sacred Acharya tradition.

This version uses a consistent style, terminology, and level of detail matching the biographies of Ayodhyaprasadji Maharaj, Keshavprasadji Maharaj, Purushottamprasadji Maharaj, and Vasudevprasadji Maharaj, making it suitable for a unified historical publication.
